Whats Paballo About?

Paballo started in 1989, when a Catholic priest called for a ministry for inner city Johannesburg to befriend the poor and address the plight of the homeless and destitute. The Central Methodist Mission responded by introducing Pepo Ya Batho - Feeding the people. Initially the ministry only focused on providing food for the inner city's homeless, in cooperation with other churches in the area.

As further needs were identified, their work expanded to include:
• feeding people once a week;
• medical care;
• providing blankets and clothing;
• spiritual care and counseling;
• help getting passports and IDs;
• Helping people return home;
• Lobbing for their basic human rights

This broader focus led to a change in name, Paballo Ya Batho - Caring for the people, incorporating concern for human dignity along with concern for physical needs.
